A little bit of history
Holt is a town with many attractive 18th-century buildings. The Georgian style of much of Holt is a result of a devastating fire that swept the town in 1708 and destroyed most of Holt's older buildings. As a result, the historic core of Holt has a preponderance of lovely Georgian buildings. Holt dates to at least the Roman period, and the town is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. It developed as an important trading centre for north Norfolk, and for centuries its name was Holt Market. Since the year 1080 onwards local traders from all over this part of Norfolk flocked to the market place in the centre of Holt to trade with one another.
The name Holt has its origins in the Anglo-Saxon word for ‘wood’.
